Week 3: The Fast God Chooses

exodusoutreach

Theme: "The Fast God Chooses"

Scripture: Isaiah 58:6-7"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"

Reflection

When we think about fasting, we often think about giving something up. But in Isaiah 58, God challenges us to see fasting differently. True fasting isn’t just about what we refrain from—it’s about what we actively do. God calls us to a fast that brings justice, breaks oppression, and provides for the needs of others.

This kind of fasting transforms lives, including our own. It draws us closer to God as we align our actions with His heart for the world. This week, reflect on how you can embody the fast God desires. Look for opportunities to serve, uplift, and bring hope to those around you.

Journaling Prompts

  1. What does Isaiah 58:6-7 reveal about God’s heart for justice and compassion?

  2. How can you reflect God’s heart in your actions this week?

  3. Think of someone in need around you. How can you tangibly show God’s love to them this week?

Daily Reflection Plan

  • Day 12 (Jan 12): Meditate on Isaiah 58:6-7. Ask God to reveal how you can align your life with His call for justice.

  • Day 13 (Jan 13): Reflect on a situation where you can “loose the chains of injustice” or “break every yoke.” Write down one action step you can take.

  • Day 14 (Jan 14): Share your resources with someone in need today. Reflect on how this act of generosity impacts your heart.

  • Day 15 (Jan 15): Pray for someone who is oppressed or burdened. Ask God to show you how you can be part of their freedom.

  • Day 16 (Jan 16): Volunteer your time or skills to serve someone in your community. Write about how serving brought you closer to God.

  • Day 17 (Jan 17): Reflect on how fasting (spiritually or physically) has deepened your connection with God. Journal about this experience.

  • Day 18 (Jan 18): Spend time reviewing your week. What did you learn about God’s heart for justice and compassion? How has your perspective changed?

Prayer for the Week

Lord, teach me to fast in the way that pleases You. Open my eyes to the needs around me and help me to act with compassion and justice. Let my life reflect Your heart for the oppressed and the needy. Amen.
